U.S. Loses Triple AAA Rating.

After a week that saw $2.5 trillion wiped off global stock markets, they are under pressure to show political leadership and reassure markets that Western governments have both the will and ability to reduce their huge and growing public debt loads.  Standard and Poor's deepened the urgency for action late on Friday by stripping the United States of its top-tier AAA credit rating, a move that over time could ripple through markets worldwide by pushing up borrowing costs and making it more difficult to secure a lasting recovery.

It cited the acrimonious debate in Washington on raising the debt ceiling and near political paralysis over the best way to reduce the its $14.3 trillion debt, which on the current trajectory could climb above 100 percent of U.S. national output this decade. S&P's one-notch downgrade of the U.S. sovereign credit rating to AA-plus, while not totally unexpected, adds another level of uncertainty. Loss of gold-plated status for the world's benchmark interest rate risks pushing up borrowing costs on everything from car loans, mortgages and corporate debt to government bonds worldwide.

China, the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt, took the world's economic superpower to task for allowing its fiscal house to get into such disarray. It also revived its calls for a new stable global reserve currency to replace the U.S. dollar, gaining a sympathetic ear in the United Kingdom. "The U.S. government has to come to terms with the painful fact that the good old days when it could just borrow its way out of messes of its own making are finally gone," China's official Xinhua news agency said in a commentary. Xinhua scorned the United States for a "debt addiction" and "short sighted" political wrangling. China, it said, "has every right now to demand the United States address its structural debt problems and ensure the safety of China's dollar assets." MadOne

WTF? FASHION MINUTE! August 7, 2011

Dear AnnaLynne McCord, trucker hats and leather cuff bracelets were popular (and unfashionable) for about five minutes in 2004. Please never wear them, or those unfortunate Christian Louboutin platform peep-toes, ever again.

Ashley Tisdale,
What do you make of the star-spangled sack Ashley Tisdale rocked, along with a pair of barely-there Daisy Dukes, upon returning to Los Angeles?

Nicki Minaj -- who is currently touring as Britney's opening act -- hit the stage for a performance on ABC's "Good Morning America" in this ghastly getup, which consisted of a bubblegum-pink vinyl bolero, see-thru skirt, loud leggings, and leopard print boots.

What's worse, Kate Bosworth's sheer, buttoned-up blouse or her turquoise-tinted tresses? I can't decide; both are blasphemous.

Also photographed at the Super Saturday charity event ... Star "I'm a lawyer!" Jones, who braved the heat in busted straw chapeau and watercolor muumuu.

The day after she "seduced" boyfriend Jason Trawick on stage during her concert at New York's Nassau Coliseum, Britney Spears was seen enjoying some downtime with her main squeeze at a Long Island beach ... in a super sloppy outfit, complete with hideous hat.

I can look past the fact that "Twilight" hunk Kellan Lutz mixed sportswear brands (Under Armour, Nike, and Adidas) while jogging in Venice Beach, but I can't forgive him for sporting those knee-high socks.

Pamela Anderson -- who turned 44 at the beginning of July -- recently celebrated her birthday at Sin City's Chateau Nightclub in a dingy-looking, lingerie-inspired corset dress and metallic heels. And from the look on the former "Baywatch" babe's face, it seems like she wasn't a fan of the crumpled frock either.

Ashley's BFF -- and fellow "High School Musical" alum -- Vanessa Hudgens snapped back at the paparazzi when they decided to take pics of her in this unfortunate ensemble.

And last but not least ... we have Rachel Bilson, who delivered a major eyesore -- in the form of a matronly Erdem ensemble -- at a Television Critics Association party hosted by Showtime and The CW.

Mischa Barton,
Former "O.C." star (and forever fashion victim) Mischa Barton was recently spotted arriving at Hollywood's Chateau Marmont for a night of partying in a Sgt. Pepper's-inspired coat and suede, straightjacket-esque boots, which -- needless to say -- did not complement one another.

Bugatti's $1.4 Million, 800-hp Sedan.

Given the superlative nature and awesome speed of Bugatti’s already legendary, 250-plus mph Veyron supercar, interest in the manufacturer’s follow-up is intense. The company had previously gone on record as saying that its next model wouldn’t be a supercar, but details were scant — until now. In a recent article from the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, Bugatti CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer confirms that the new car will be in the vein of the controversial 16 C Galibier concept, which debuted in 2009. It will seat four and have a generous trunk, Dürheimer says; you can bet that a set of fitted luggage will be one of the pricey options.

Bugatti hopes to sell between 1,000 and 1,500 units of the super-luxe sedan over the course of its lifetime, roughly triple the number of Veyron coupes and Grand Sport convertibles Bugatti built since 2004. The story also says that the Galibier will go on sale in the fall of 2012, about a year earlier than most earlier projections. How much will it cost? Dürheimer says it will command at least €1M, which amounts to about $1.42 million at today’s exchange rates. MadOne

BOX OFFICE REPORT Jul 29th - 31st Weekend

Budgeted at only $110 million, The Smurfs took down another $4.4 million in its early foreign markets and has a worldwide tally of $40.6 million after three days of release. As expected its opening weekend performance is attributed to mainly families and younger kids, with moviegoers under the age of 18 giving it an A rating at CinemaScore.

On the opposite of the coin, Universal Pictures’ adaptation of the Cowboys & Aliens comic adventure was tracked to win this weekend with somewhere between $40 and $45 million but found itself tied with $36.2 million as well. As said above, it was released in nearly 400 more theaters in the states and came to the finish line with a lower average of $9,653 per showing as a result. No foreign numbers to give at this point so its $36.2 million is the worldwide tally for a film with a price tag of $163 million. With no explosive foreign campaign planned (a slow rollout across the globe), it will need strong and steady numbers moving forward if the studio hopes to catch that budget. The studio reports that  75% of the audience was over the age of 25, and 39%, over the age of 50.

Following in 3rd place is last weekend’s champ, Captain America: The First Avenger. Paramount and Marvel Studio’s feature film version of the best-selling superhero dropped 61% in its second weekend performance, pulling in an estimated $24.9 million in coin. The sophomore gross has increased its domestic cume to $116.7 million after 10 days of release in the states. It’s not a bad number when considering the film cost $140 million to produce. The film’s foreign gross sits currently at $53.5 million so it has a global score of $170.2 million after its first two weekends at the box office. Mania.com
