We now have that answer the estimates placing its weekend numbers at $34.5 million in coin, a decent sophomoric effort with only a 47% drop in attendance. The latest numbers increased its domestic value to $119.2 million in sales after 10 days of release and has convinced many experts that it will strike the $200 million range before the end of its theatrical run. With Thor also finishing in 2nd place in the overseas battle by taking down another $27.5 million in 60 foreign markets, the studio has a foreign gross of $225 million. Add the two markets together and they have a global cume of $344.5 million after its first two weekends of mass release.
Following in 2nd place is Universal Pictures’ comedy Bridesmaids, which laughed up $24.6 million in its debut frame. It’s yet another successful partnership between the studio and producer Judd Apatow, taking down the best opening since 2008’s Step Brothers ($30.9 mil) and the best R-rated debut for any comedy since last year’s Due Date ($32.6 mil). Taking full advantage of being one of the only female-focused releases of the early summer line-up, the studio announced its audience was 67% female, with 63% being over the age of 30. The budget for the comedy is only $32.5 million so they should be crossing the profit lines by next weekend.
The 3rd spot goes to the film which is blowing away all expectations this May. Not only did Universal’s Fast Five take down another $19.5 million here in the states in its third frame, the action flick also won the international race once again by rolling up another $58 million from 8,800 locations in 61 territories. The latest numbers has its domestic at $168.7 million and the foreign at $271.7 million.
Next up is Sony Screen Gems’ 3D horror tale, Priest. The Paul Bettany-led vampire film---an adaptation of the graphic novel by the same name---found $14.5 million on 2,864 venues across the nation. It’s not technically a summer tent pole as it didn’t quite make it into the 3,000+ range but with the screens that it did have, it averaged a decent $5,063 per showing. Mania.com
