New Universal Chargers For Electric Cars

Seven auto manufacturers have banded together to create a new international standard of universal electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations. The announcement was made last week at the 15th International Electronic Systems for Motor Vehicles Conference, held by the Society of German Engineers. Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, GM, Porsche and Volkswagen have all thrown their names into the ring.  The group has proposed a single type of charging station that will juice up EVs regardless of where you are or your car’s country of origin. That is, as long as your car was made from one of these seven companies.

Besides making car charging more convenient for drivers, the new agreement could also help the carmakers save money. Until now, each of the car companies only offered charging stations for their own cars, which is expensive and wasteful. “Standardization will reduce build complexity for manufacturers, accelerate the installation of common systems internationally and, most importantly, improve the ownership experience for EV drivers,” the companies said in a joint press release.
