Magic Johnson plans to bid for the Los Angeles Dodgers

Former Lakers star Magic Johnson is putting together a potential ownership group that includes former Braves and Nationals executive Stan Kasten and the backing of a high-powered financial services firm with assets of $125 billion. Needless to say, Magic is not playing around.

"I am so hyped, I'm ready to start right now,'' said Johnson in a phone interview Friday morning. "The Dodgers have been so important to this community for so many years, for so many reasons. I've lived through it all like everyone else and I want to make them great again.''

Johnson is that rare former sports star whose business acumen has matched his athleticism. Since retiring from the Lakers in 1996, he has made millions in investments that have focused on rebuilding inner cities. His substantial portfolio includes Starbucks franchises and movie theaters and a piece of the Lakers, which he recently sold.

"The Dodgers are my next big thing," Johnson said. "This is not just millions of my money, this is dear to my heart. This is bringing back the brand for the people of Los Angeles."

Expanded MLB playoffs more likely for 2012

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Baseball management is more likely to consider expanded playoffs for 2012 than for next year.

After discussing upcoming collective bargaining Tuesday with major league general managers, MLB executive vice president Rob Manfred said adding wild-card teams for 2011 would be “a difficult trick to pull off” because it would have to be a modification of the current labor contract, which runs through next season.
Manfred said the proposal would have to be made by the owners’ labor policy committee, then endorsed by owners and agreed to by the players’ association.

Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry favors additional wild cards. He credited commissioner Bud Selig with pushing through the initial wild-card playoffs, which began in 1995. “It turns out the commissioner was right on,” he said. Hendry thinks a majority of GMs would back more playoffs. “It’s all about postseason baseball. That’s what fans like,” Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Roy Halladay(notes) is hittable, after all, this postseason. Who knew?
Working on nine days’ rest, Halladay’s postseason hitless streak ended at 11 innings when Ross homered off him in the NL championship series opener.

Cody Ross hit 2 home runs in the Giants 4 - 3 win over the Phillies.

Halladay’s dud of an encore means he will have to watch for a while now, as the Phillies try to crawl out of this 0-1 hole. Game 2 is on Sunday, and Halladay won’t take the mound again until Game 4 at the earliest, in San Francisco.

ALCS: Rangers tie series and 1 - 1

Less than 24 hours after allowing the New York Yankees to make the biggest comeback in franchise history, the Rangers showed no signs of a hangover in Saturday's Game 2. Their hitters roughed up a New York starter (Phil Hughes(notes)) for the second straight day and the bullpen actually got the job done this time after being handed the game by starter Colby Lewis(notes) in the sixth inning.

Joba's look is just about the way the Yankee's played.

Cliff Lee(notes) made it seem like he won almost a half-dozen games for the Rangers in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday. Lee won the actual game, 5-1. He won the momentum game, by giving the Rangers home-field advantage. He won the experience game, by giving a team that has never won a post-season series a sudden feeling of empowerment. And maybe most importantly, he won the psychological game, by the mere fact that the Rays haven’t come close to figuring him out and can’t exactly load up videotape of a team that has beaten him in the playoffs. Halladay takes his historic no-hitter in stride

PHILADELPHIA – Deep inside the tunnel next to the Philadelphia Phillies dugout is a chair. It is tucked away behind a short stairwell, hidden from the dugout, with a small television as the only connection to everything happening outside. This is where Roy Halladay(notes) often goes between innings of the games he pitches and where he sat each inning Wednesday evening as he became the second pitcher to throw a no-hitter in a postseason game.

For much of the last decade he has been baseball’s most dominant pitcher, a superstar without the postseason to accentuate his standing, three times a 20-game winner, holder of the Cy Young but no meaningful October starts. Then, Wednesday, in his first postseason game, he threw a no-hitter. As if there is any doubt now about how great Roy Halladay has become. Phillies 4 Reds 0.

Adrian Gonzalez(notes) hit a three-run homer, Ryan Ludwick(notes) and Matt Stairs(notes) also connected and the Padres put San Francisco’s potential celebration on hold for at least a day with a dramatic 6-4 victory Friday night.
