Icy Saturn Moon Pumps Out 15.8 Gigawatts of Heat Power
Using data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, researchers have determined that the far southern reaches of the Saturn moon Enceladus produce about 15.8 gigawatts of heat-generated power. That's about 2.6 times the power output of all the hot springs in and around Yellowstone — and 10 times more than scientists had predicted, researchers said. The 15.8 gigawatts of heat on Enceladus measured by Cassini is roughly equivalent to the output of 20 coal-fired power plants. This came as a surprise, since a previous study had predicted that the region should generate only about 1.1 gigawatts.
The new results make Enceladus an even more attractive candidate to support life as we know it. Scientists had suspected that a huge, liquid-water ocean sloshes beneath the moon's icy crust, and the increased heat readings only make this supposition more likely, researchers said. On Earth, life almost invariably gains a foothold wherever liquid water exists, so "follow the water" has become a mantra for scientists searching for life beyond Earth. Space.com
Subway Passes McDonald's
It's official: the Subway sandwich chain has surpassed McDonald's Corp. as the world's largest restaurant chain, in terms of units. At the end of last year, Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide, compared to McDonald's 32,737. The burger giant disclosed its year-end store count in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing late last month.
The race for global dominance is an important one for an industry that's mostly saturated in the U.S. High unemployment and economic uncertainty have battered the restaurant industry in the U.S., and chains are increasingly looking overseas for growth, particularly in Asia. Subway just opened its 1,000th location in Asia, including its first in Vietnam. Subway, which opened its first international restaurant in 1984, in Bahrain, expects its number of international restaurants to exceed its domestic ones by 2020, says Don Fertman, Subway's Chief Development Officer. The chain currently has just over 24,000 restaurants in the U.S., where it generated $10.5 billion of its $15.2 billion in revenue last year.
McDonald's is still the leader when it comes to sales. The burger chain reported $24 billion in revenue last year. "We remain focused on listening to and serving our customers, and are committed to being better, not just bigger," a McDonald's spokeswoman says. Subway, which surpassed the number of McDonald's in the U.S. about nine years ago, expects China to eventually become one of its largest markets. The sandwich shop only has 199 restaurants in China now, but expects to have more than 500 by 2015.
WTF? FASHION MINUTE! Mar, 8th 2011
"Battle: Los Angeles" star Michelle Rodriguez also committed a major crime against fashion when she sported this see-thru lingerie-like ensemble to an Oscars after party. Sheer disaster!
Also showing off her midriff this week was Jennifer Lopez. Unfortunately, while the 41-year-old "American Idol" host has a rockin' bod, the ruffly pirate-like half shirt and checked jacket she donned for the "Idol" finalists party on Thursday night were far from fabulous.
Lady Gaga,
Johnny Depp,
Taylor Momsen,
Nicki Minaj,
Is anyone else getting tired of Lady Gaga’s lame fashion antics? We know we’ll never see her in jeans and a T-shirt, but does she have to wear such ugly ensembles on a daily basis?
Yes, he finally got rid of his creepy beard, but Johnny Depp still needs to lose the hideous, hipster-farmer look … STAT.
Forget discussing her “Look at me, I’m so hardcore” boots … where exactly did Taylor Momsen’s pants go?
Speaking of trousers, check out the skin-tight, seizure-inducing pants rapper Nicki Minaj wore to dinner at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood, California.

Nano Hummingbird
The aviation milestone was achieved as part of a contract awarded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to AeroVironment (AV) to design and build a flying prototype “hummingbird-like” aircraft for the Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program.
This is a pretty big deal. When NAVs such as the Nano Hummingbird become operational, soldiers fighting a battle in a crowded urban area will be able to use them to fly sophisticated sensors through open windows in buildings to learn about enemy positions. In civilian applications, the NAVs could be used to gather vital information from inside mines, caves and buildings for search and rescue operations. “The success of the NAV program paves the way for a new generation of aircraft with the agility and appearance of small birds,” said Todd Hylton, DARPA’s NAV program manager.
