adidas JS Gorilla

The mad-scientist approach of Jeremy Scott has been a controversial one to say the least. Today, we get a look at another pair set to drop with the rest of the Jeremy Scott x adidas Originals Spring/Summer 2012 Collection. This pair features a completely black fur upper that stretches up into the stuffed Gorilla head and arms. Hints of leather on the hands and face of the gorilla can also be seen and add a nice finishing touch. NiceKicks

BOX OFFICE REPORT July 22nd - 24th Weekend

Paramount’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The adaptation of the best-selling Marvel superhero jumped out to an early lead Friday by taking down $25 million over its first day and held onto the 1st place spot throughout, with an estimated bow of $65.8 million over its first three days. If the numbers stay at that mark or come in higher when tomorrow’s actual statistics are confirmed, it would mean that Paramount and Marvel Studios have just released the highest opening superhero pic of the summer, ahead of Thor’s $65.7 million premiere.

Following in 2nd place is last weekend’s champion, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2. Experiencing a severe 72% drop over its second weekend, the final installment in Warner Bros. Pictures’ cash-friendly franchise conjured up only $48.0 million, a far cry from the record-breaking $169 million it grabbed over its first three days. The final Potter adventure did win the international box office race hands down for its second frame by pulling in another $121.3 million, increasing its foreign take to $560.4 million.

The other new wide release for this weekend is Sony Screen Gems’ Friends with Benefits. The comedy which pokes fun at most romantic comedies managed to find the 3rd place spot in its debut by grabbing $18.5 million on 2,926 theaters across the states. The studio reports the opening audience consisted mostly of the female persuasion, with 62% of the gender making up its demographics. Mania.com

NASA's Next Mars Rover to Land at Huge Gale Crater

WASHINGTON — It's official: NASA's next Mars rover has a landing site, and it's a giant crater called Gale. NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission is slated to launch in late November, and will drop a car-size rover named Curiosity at the Gale crater. Gale crater is about 96 miles (154 kilometers) wide and has a mountain at its center that rises higher, from the crater floor up, than Mount Rainer near Seattle. The crater, which is named after Australian astronomer Walter F. Gale, is so large that the U.S. states of Connecticut and Rhode Island could fit inside it, NASA officials said.

Gale crater is also thought to harbor clues of ancient water activity on the Martian surface, and one of Curiosity's primary tasks will be to root around for evidence that Mars is, or was, capable of supporting microbial life.

The agency revealed the landing site (July 22) in a briefing hosted by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington. The announcement coincides with the museum's celebration of Mars Day, which commemorates the 35th anniversary of NASA's Viking 1 Mars landing on July 20, 1976. Space.com

Nevada June jobless rate climbs to 12.4 percent

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada's unemployment rate has inched up to 12.4 percent in June to mark the first time this year numbers have increased. The June figure is a slight jump from May's 12.1 percent jobless rate but is still lower than last June's 14.9 percent statewide unemployment.

State employment department chief economist Bill Anderson says non-farm payrolls shed 2,900 jobs between May and June, signaling that weak national market conditions are trickling down to Nevada. The Las Vegas metropolitan area continues to post the highest jobless numbers in the Nevada, with a 13.8 unemployment rate last month, compared to 13 percent in the Reno-Sparks area and 12.5 percent in Carson City. Nevada still lags behind the national June jobless rate of 9.2 percent. MadOne

Men’s grooming habits that turn women off

1. Long, dirty toe nails. Or, as one Threader called it, "Hobbit feet." I love that. It's true. Guys, you don't have to sit for a pedicure, but there's no excuse for claws filled with dirt.

2. Hair where it shouldn't be. Nose hair was the number-one complaint with ear hair a close second. "Why is it so hard to buy a trimmer and a mirror?" asked a completely reasonable Threader. We don't have the answer.

3. Mouth madness. This is just basics. We're brushing, flossing, and whitening, but certain guys seem to think they can get away with "yuck mouth," as a Threader called it. Not true.

4. Unattractive smells. This can mean not showering often enough or not embracing deodorant. This is also related to #3 (see above).

5. Eyebrow issues. Either overgrown or over plucked. We don't want unruly, caveman hairs, but we also don't want you to look more sculpted than we do.

6. Too much cologne. If everything you touch starts to smell like your medicine cabinet, that's not good.

7. Too much waxing. There's grooming and then there's grooming. No one wants to feel like they're with a newborn.

8. Dry, cracked heels. You can put lotion on them, you know.

9. Hair that never moves. If your hair is as hard as a car door, you've got to rethink your products.

10. Letting your blackheads live on. Everyone has zits, especially in the hot and sweaty summer. But, jeez, if you have blackheads on your face, deal with them or book a facial where someone else will.

Amy Winehouse, 27, found dead

LONDON (AP) - Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27. Winehouse shot to fame in 2006 with the album "Back to Black," whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse - with her black beehive hairdoand old-fashioned sailor tattoos - one of music's most recognizable stars. But her personal life, with its drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders and destructive relationships, soon took over her career.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene. Singer and actress Kelly Osbourne, who helped Winehouse check into a drug addiction treatment facility in 2008, was one of many who grieved for the singer on Twitter.

Last month, Winehouse canceled her European comeback tour after she swayed and slurred her way through barely recognizable songs in her first show in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Booed and jeered off stage, she flew home and her management said she would take time off to recover.

This year, the NBA 2K gaming series select MJ to rock the cover along with some of his friendly competitors. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson will also share some of the spotlight with Jordan on the soon-to-be-released NBA 2K12 video game. MJ is specifically pictured wearing the “Bred” Air Jordan 13s on the cover. Look for the NBA 2K12 video game to hit shelves on October 4, 2011 (lockout or not). MadOne

Las Vegas home to the next Judge Judy?

A New York City casting director is scouring Las Vegas for the next Judge Judy. “We’re looking for the Guy Fieri of Judge Judys,” casting agent Beth Schiff says. By that she means someone with personality, pizazz and a clear point of view to star in a new courtroom TV series that would be filmed in Las Vegas. (Fieri is the tattooed, spiky haired, blonde chef that has taken television by storm. He hosts two Food Network series and NBC’s “Minute to Win It.” He is also a UNLV alumnus.)

Experience matters, too. Just like home cooks look to Fieri for recipes and cooking tips, producers want their Las Vegas judge to be a legal expert. Bicoastal Productions hasn’t yet sold the unnamed project, but Schiff says several networks are interested. Although producers are tight lipped about details, the show is expected to follow the Judge Judy model: a judge in a courtroom presiding over cases. Schiff is looking for a judge or mediator with a background in small claims. “Once there’s a great talent attached to a project, that’s when deals are made,” Schiff said. “I’ve found some interesting characters so far, but I’m still looking.” Producers felt Las Vegas was a natural fit for a courtroom reality show. It’s a big enough city to offer credible legal minds, but still maintains a small-town feel, complete with kooky residents. The stories and characters are probably a little more unusual in Vegas than in other parts of the country,” Schiff said. Las Vegas Sun

UNLV student among 16 arrested in hacking roundup

A UNLV student was among 16 people arrested Tuesday in a nationwide roundup of suspected Internet hackers accused of attacking websites of several major U.S. companies. According to the FBI, Mercedes Renee Haefer, 20, also known by the aliases "No" and "MMMM," was part of the hacker group Anonymous that authorities allege coordinated Internet attacks on websites owned by PayPal, Amazon, Visa and Mastercard.

Haefer, a journalism and media studies student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been charged in a federal indictment with conspiracy and intentional damage to a protected computer. She appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Leavitt in Las Vegas. He released the defendant on her own recognizance but ordered her to surrender her laptop computer. Her attorney, New York-based Stanley L. Cohen, said the charges were frivolous and his client will plead not guilty. Las Vegas Review Journal

FBI raids suspected Anonymous hackers in 10 states

Internet "hacktivist" group Anonymous was the target of a bevy of early morning raids conducted at homes in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico and Ohio. FBI agents used search warrants to obtain computers and other electronics from the residences and arrested a total of 16 individuals with ages ranging from teens all the way to early 40s. Along with legal names, the indictment also notes screen names and internet monikers used by the group to communicate anonymously.

These arrests were just part of a total of 35 search warrants which were executed today as part of the ongoing investigation into the security-threatening hacking activities of the Anonymous collective. Among its various exploits, the brigade of cyber spies has been implicated in attacks on everyone from Sony to the federal government. The group has also executed web-based attacks on major credit card companies including Mastercard and Visa. According to a press release from the Department of Justice, today's arrests focused primarily on Anonymous members who waged a cyber war on PayPal. Anonymous was allegedly inspired to hack the online payment company in "Operation Avenge Assange" after Paypal refused to accept donations for Wikileaks, the well-known whistleblower site headed by Julian Assange. Anonymous' hacker cohorts, LulzSec, have taken aim at the CIA, as well as the Arizona Police Department in an effort to expose racial discrimination. Yesterday, LulzSec took credit for an attack on Rupert Murdoch's U.K. tabloid The Sun.

It wasn't immediately clear whether any of today's arrests also included members of LulzSec, but the group's Twitter feed appears to be as lively as ever. Today's actions clearly show that the federal government is no longer content to sit by while hackers have their run of the internet, but it's likely that Anonymous will respond in short order. How Accurate Are Restaurant Calorie Counts?

Americans are eating out more than ever before, but can we trust the calorie counts on restaurant menus? A new study published July 19 in Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, since 40 percent of the foods analyzed had more calories than stated on the menu. 19 percent of the time, the count was off by 100 or more calories, with one belly-busting side dish that contained upwards of 1,000 more calories than claimed on the menu.

While many eateries do have trustworthy calorie counts, the US Department of Agriculture-funded study reported that the surprising rate of undercounts, especially for fattening foods, were hardly likely to be random error and could derail efforts to lose weight.  The researchers tested 269 randomly selected foods purchased at 42 restaurants in three states.
