Unemployment in Las Vegas area takes a dip

CARSON CITY — For the first time in four months, the unemployment rate has dropped in the Las Vegas area, dipping to 13.6 percent in September. The number of unemployed fell from 135,720 in August to 129,400 in September. The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today the statewide rate stabilized at 13.4 percent for the month, the same rate as in August. Gov. Brian Sandoval said, “This month it appears the unemployment rate is stabilizing and that job growth is outpacing job losses.” Bill Anderson, chief economist for the department said, however, “While employers in the Silver State added 10,000 most were seasonal in nature.” The U.S. rate remained at 9.1 percent.

In the Las Vegas area, construction employment grew by 1,000 jobs to a total of 41,900 in September. The number of jobs in the hotel-casino category increased by 800 to 161,200. The 13.6 percent in the Las Vegas area was the lowest since 12.1 percent in April and compared to the 14.2 percent in August. The department reported employment in manufacturing in the Las Vegas area remained at 18,300. The number of jobs in trade, transportation and utilities reached 143,400, up 400 from August. Washoe County, meanwhile, also saw a decline in unemployment, dropping from 13 percent in August to 12.6 percent in September. Carson City’s rate fell from 12.7 percent in August to 12.4 percent in September. MadOne

Las Vegas best place to buy home

With prices at 20-year lows, Las Vegas ranks as the best city in the country to buy a home instead of renting, a survey by San Francisco-based Trulia.com real estate listing service shows. Home ownership beats renting in 74 percent of 50 major U.S. cities included in Trulia's Summer 2011 Rent vs. Buy Index, which compares the cost of buying and renting a two-bedroom apartment, condo or townhouse. Joining Las Vegas in the top five cities are Detroit; Mesa, Ariz.; Fresno, Calif.; and Arlington, Texas. Las Vegas came in with a price-to-rent ratio of 6, based on Trulia's median list price of $58,000 divided by $9,700 for 12 months of rent, or about $800 a month.

"Homes in Las Vegas are a bargain by any criteria you want to apply -- comparative price approach to other cities, cost to replicate, investment approach," Murphy said. "That's why we're selling 50,000-plus resale homes each of the past two years. The only problem is, you need cash to be a buyer in this market because of high unemployment and lenders who don't really want to lend." Today's record-low mortgage rates have actually made banks less enthusiastic about approving residential mortgage applications. Until a middle ground on lending practices can be met, many highly qualified buyers may be forced to be renters for now.

The five cities where it's clearly better to rent than buy are New York; Fort Worth, Texas; Omaha, Neb.; Seattle; and San Francisco. MadOne

Nevada June jobless rate climbs to 12.4 percent

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada's unemployment rate has inched up to 12.4 percent in June to mark the first time this year numbers have increased. The June figure is a slight jump from May's 12.1 percent jobless rate but is still lower than last June's 14.9 percent statewide unemployment.

State employment department chief economist Bill Anderson says non-farm payrolls shed 2,900 jobs between May and June, signaling that weak national market conditions are trickling down to Nevada. The Las Vegas metropolitan area continues to post the highest jobless numbers in the Nevada, with a 13.8 unemployment rate last month, compared to 13 percent in the Reno-Sparks area and 12.5 percent in Carson City. Nevada still lags behind the national June jobless rate of 9.2 percent. MadOne

Las Vegas home to the next Judge Judy?

A New York City casting director is scouring Las Vegas for the next Judge Judy. “We’re looking for the Guy Fieri of Judge Judys,” casting agent Beth Schiff says. By that she means someone with personality, pizazz and a clear point of view to star in a new courtroom TV series that would be filmed in Las Vegas. (Fieri is the tattooed, spiky haired, blonde chef that has taken television by storm. He hosts two Food Network series and NBC’s “Minute to Win It.” He is also a UNLV alumnus.)

Experience matters, too. Just like home cooks look to Fieri for recipes and cooking tips, producers want their Las Vegas judge to be a legal expert. Bicoastal Productions hasn’t yet sold the unnamed project, but Schiff says several networks are interested. Although producers are tight lipped about details, the show is expected to follow the Judge Judy model: a judge in a courtroom presiding over cases. Schiff is looking for a judge or mediator with a background in small claims. “Once there’s a great talent attached to a project, that’s when deals are made,” Schiff said. “I’ve found some interesting characters so far, but I’m still looking.” Producers felt Las Vegas was a natural fit for a courtroom reality show. It’s a big enough city to offer credible legal minds, but still maintains a small-town feel, complete with kooky residents. The stories and characters are probably a little more unusual in Vegas than in other parts of the country,” Schiff said. Las Vegas Sun

UNLV student among 16 arrested in hacking roundup

A UNLV student was among 16 people arrested Tuesday in a nationwide roundup of suspected Internet hackers accused of attacking websites of several major U.S. companies. According to the FBI, Mercedes Renee Haefer, 20, also known by the aliases "No" and "MMMM," was part of the hacker group Anonymous that authorities allege coordinated Internet attacks on websites owned by PayPal, Amazon, Visa and Mastercard.

Haefer, a journalism and media studies student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been charged in a federal indictment with conspiracy and intentional damage to a protected computer. She appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lawrence Leavitt in Las Vegas. He released the defendant on her own recognizance but ordered her to surrender her laptop computer. Her attorney, New York-based Stanley L. Cohen, said the charges were frivolous and his client will plead not guilty. Las Vegas Review Journal

Las Vegas casino guards counter sue NBA’s Charles Oakley over altercation

A group of security officers countersued retired NBA "enforcer" Charles Oakley on Monday, charging he has assaulted Las Vegas casino workers at least three times since 2005 – but has repeatedly avoided arrest because of his celebrity VIP status.
The officers and the Aria hotel-casino were sued by Oakley on May 12 in Clark County District Court over a 2010 altercation, and on Monday the officers and the casino filed their first response to Oakley's lawsuit. The officers' counterclaim is part of that response.
Oakley's suit charged that while visiting Aria on the Las Vegas Strip in May 2010, the former power forward was injured by the officers after a verbal dispute with casino personnel escalated into the officers attacking him without cause.
Attorneys for MGM Resorts International’s Aria property at CityCenter and the security officers, in their response, denied allegations Oakley was subjected to an unprovoked "gang-style" beatdown by the officers.Oakley has said he needs continual medical treatment because of the incident and the Charlotte Bobcats, where he is an assistant coach, last month hired another assistant in anticipation of Oakley not returning to the bench.

In Monday’s counterclaim, attorneys for the Aria security officers related a series of events dramatically different than what Oakley alleged in his lawsuit. Aria is not a plaintiff in the counterclaim.Monday’s claim says Oakley was at the Liquid pool at Aria with friends including current Boston Celtics player Jermaine O'Neal when Oakley, who had several large alcoholic drinks, became agitated because it was near closing time and "he and his friends were not allowed to invite additional females into the pool."A scuffle erupted with personnel of Aria and the Light Group, operator of the pool, and at one point a Light Group employee was thrown to the ground and his head struck a patio table, the claim says.
Oakley eventually headed back to his hotel room at Aria when he was encountered by Aria security personnel, who wanted to question him about the incident at the pool and a request by Light Group personnel that Oakley be detained for assault and battery.
After Oakley refused to stop, he pushed an Aria officer out of the way and "threatened bodily harm to other officers," the claim says. Aria officers then worked to restrain him, and he kicked and punched them, bit two of them, elbowed two in the face, spat on one, used obscenities and "threatened to knock people out," the claim says, adding three of the officers were injured. Oakley was handcuffed and detained, but, "as in past encounters, was not arrested because of his celebrity status," the claim says.

The security officers are seeking general and punitive damages that are unspecified, but that are at least $20,000.
The officers named in the counterclaim are Elijah Germany, Robert McCain, Avion Reed and Joseph Kenny.
Their attorneys noted that as an NBA player, Oakley was known as a "tough, physical player" and that "Oakley’s history is filled with physical play, resulting in flagrant fouls, ejections from games, fines and other punishments."
"Oakley has been involved in a number of altercations, fights and/or arrests upon individuals outside of his basketball career," the court filing said.He has used his celebrity status to obtain VIP benefits "from various hotels and casinos, including Aria," the counterclaim says. It goes on to say that Oakley "has a history of battering innocent bystanders" – including two employees at Bellagio, another MGM Resorts International property on the Las Vegas Strip.
On July 17, 2005, he punched Bellagio Security Supervisor Shawn Duran in the face, the claim says. "Duran wanted to press charges, but was persuaded not to because of Oakley’s celebrity status," the claim says.

Then on April 9, 2006, he sent another Bellagio employee to the hospital with a 1/2-inch laceration above his right eye, the counterclaim says. This employee wasn’t named in the claim.
"Oakley had been playing craps and threw a handful of dice at a Bellagio employee," the filing says, adding a police report was filed. "However, because of Oakley’s status as a high roller, the employee did not press charges against Oakley," the claim says.

As for the May 2010 incident, the employees charged that Oakley sued them and Aria "and Oakley released false and misleading information to the media to portray himself as a victim, when in reality, he was the vicious aggressor who provoked the incidents at issue."
Oakley was separately sued in Clark County District Court on Monday by Aria employee Jeff Marshall over the May 2010 incident.
Oakley charged at Marshall, demanded he surrender the camera, backed him into a DJ booth and "assaulted and battered Marshall by ripping the camera from his neck and throwing the $2,500 camera into the swimming pool," ruining the camera, the lawsuit says.
That lawsuit says Marshall didn’t take any pictures during the incident and the assault by Oakley caused him emotional stress, pain and suffering. That suit also seeks general and punitive damages that are unspecified but that are at least $20,000. Aria, the officers and Marshall are represented in the litigation by Las Vegas attorney Martin Kravitz and associates with the Las Vegas law firm Kravitz, Schnitzer, Sloane & Johnson Chtd.

Clear Channel Has Big Plans for Vegas & iHeartRadio

Clear Channel humbly describes it as “the biggest event in radio history.”

It’s a two-day gig, the iHeartRadio Music Festival, set for Las Vegas, Sept. 23–24, and featuring seemingly everyone from Lady Gaga to Rascal Flatts to Usher to Sting to JLo to the Black Eyed Peas; all aimed at making a huge splash in the personalized radio pool with a relaunch of the iHeartRadio website — and maybe getting Pandora a bit wet in the process. The iHeartRadio operation is being expanded to include more “personalized content” options — widely seen as Clear Channel’s response to the Pandora challenge — as well as more emphasis on mobile outlets. This move is likely to be watched in business circles as traditional radio’s most notable response to customized online “radio” content. But Clear Channel Radio Chairman of Media and Entertainment Platforms Bob Pittman said the event “underscores Clear Channel’s transformation to a dynamic integrated media and entertainment company with an unmatched reach in the U.S. ... The new iHeartRadio will offer users a much broader, more integrated and customized digital listening experience than any other service available — and it’s all in one product.”

Concerning the improved capabilities of iHeartRadio, a release hinted at “the ability to create custom stations with even more songs, more control than the leading custom radio station services and with no commercials through the end of the year, offering listeners everything they want digitally in one fully integrated service — free.”

Clear Channel makes the mobile app for iHeartRadio available on platforms like the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry and the HP TouchPad. The company is staking a lot on this, with one spokesperson calling it as “a pivotal moment for the company as it transforms from a broadcast radio company to a fully-realized, integrated media and entertainment company.” But it also emphasized that digital offerings are “additive” to its terrestrial radio biz, “not a threat.”

It’s not just iHeartRadio that will be tested come September; it’s also Clear Channel’s overall promotional reach. The company says this festival “is something only Clear Channel could accomplish.” It is pulling out many stops in promotion. Clear Channel Radio President and CEO John Hogan said the company has started “the biggest national promotion in radio history … All 850 Clear Channel radio stations, spanning diverse music formats, introduced millions of listeners across the country to this historic music event. The majority of our stations will also feature exclusive radio and digital content including exclusive artist interviews and ticket giveaways.”

Ryan Seacrest will host the event, to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pittman said Clear Channel will be measuring the online audience of the festival.

Las Vegas records 15th month with increase in visitors

Great news come for my fair city. Everyone knows Las Vegas has been one of the worst cities impacted by this economy, so to hear that we are finally getting some tourist back into my fair city and state, now that is GREAT. Read on to see why....

May brought Las Vegas its 15th straight month of visitation and room rate gains, according to numbers released today. The number of visitors for May increased by 3.3 percent from 3.26 million in 2010 to 3.37 in 2011, according to a monthly report from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Room rates for the month increased nearly 10 percent from $99 last year to $108 in May of this year.

Citywide occupancy rates also increased during the past year, from 82.6 percent to 86.1 percent. Convention attendance during the year-over-year period was flat with last year, but the number of meetings held during May increased from 1,577 to 1,753. Gaming win on the Strip increased 28.9 percent from $450.2 million in May 2010 to $580.4 million in May 2011, the largest increase since February 2010. In Clark County, gaming revenue increased nearly 20 percent to $853.5 million. The LVCVA said the increases were boosted by strong baccarat play and sports betting.

Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport was up 5 percent during the year-over-year period while traffic at the Nevada/California line was down 1.7 percent. Visitation in Laughlin fell 2.5 percent from May 2010 to May 2011 while it increased by 1.3 percent in Mesquite.

Las Vegas' iconic Sahara Hotel to close in May

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) – A legendary Las Vegas hotel and casino will close its doors on May 16. Friday, more than 1,000 workers at the Sahara Hotel were told to look for new jobs. The people who bought the Sahara in 2007 at the height of the gaming boom before the recession now say keeping it open is no longer "economically viable." Those who worked at the nearly 60-year-old property now and during its heyday say it's tragic to see the Sahara go.

Alan Feldman of MGM Resorts International - no stranger to re-inventing properties - says long-term, the end of the Sahara, while sad, could be the beginning of a good thing.

"We have Wynn where the Desert Inn once was. We have the Mirage where the Castaways once was. We have Bellagio where the Dunes used to be and we have the MGM Grand where the Marina was. And we can go on and on."

The owners, SBE Entertainment, say they are working on several options, including redeveloping the property. The Sahara now sits next to the shuttered Fontainebleau and across from stalled Echelon.

Michael Jackson's Neverland Will Be Recreated in Las Vegas

Cirque du Soleil president Daniel Lamarre announced that the Neverland ranch recreation would feature a “Jackson-themed lounge, an interactive memorabilia museum and a theater.”

Jackson’s former home will be recreated at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino and is set to open in 2013.

Cirque du Soleil has also developed a show that celebrates the King of Pop’s legacy and is the most expensive show in the French company’s history. Michael Jackson, The Immortal World Tour is set to open in October in Montreal and hit 30 U.S. cities before travelling to Europe. In Las Vegas, Cirque producers plan to open a more intimate, theatrical show at the new theater. The cost of both projects will be shared by Jackson’s estate and Cirque, as each own 50 percent of the projects.

Flavor Flav on the Las Vegas Strip!

Flav is the first person to give hip-hop a permanent residency on the Las Vegas strip.  Las Vegas hosts over 37 million tourists each year and 11% of these people are minorities.  There is no direct competition for a hip-hop centered establishment on the strip so this is a huge win for people looking to capitalize on the forgotten minority dollar.  We'l see ho long this lasts!!!

Apparently Flav's original business partner is not happy that Flav went and allegedly cut him out of the deal with a new Las Vegas venture called House of Flavors. TMZ

Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez To Perform At Billboard Music Awards

Some of the biggest acts on the charts will be on hand to take the stage when the 2011 Billboard Music Awards hit Las Vegas on May 22. Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, the Black Eyed Peas, Taio Cruz, Keith Urban and 2010's crossover kings, Lady Antebellum, have all been tapped to perform at the show, which ABC will air live from Sin City's MGM Grand.

The event honors artists who have appeared on the Billboard charts during the period of February 28, 2010, through March 1, 2011. Winners are also determined by album, single and digital sales, touring, streaming and social interactions on MySpace, Facebook and other popular online destinations for music, according to Billboard.com.

The scheduled performers have not just been successful during the period of eligibility for the awards show, but they are still hot on the charts. Currently, Rihanna's Britney Spears-free "S&M" holds steady at #2 on the Hot 100 chart, the Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough" is right behind at #3 and J.Lo's "On the Floor" is sitting at #8. Keith Urban's "Without You," meanwhile, is #11 on the Country Songs tally.  Mtv.com

Kings contemplate moving to Anaheim or Vegas?

The Sacramento Kings haven't been able to get a deal to replace Arco Arena and so now the team is looking to possibly move, according to the Sporting News. "We are looking at all options to ensure the long-term viability of this franchise," owners Joe and Gavin Maloof said Monday in a statement. Up till now, the brothers had been saying that they wanted to keep the Kings in Sacramento. Two possible destinations being mentioned are Las Vegas and Anaheim, where the NHL's Anaheim Ducks could use someone to share the Honda Center with.
It could be embarrassing to former Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns guard Kevin Johnson, now Sacramento's mayor, to lose the NBA team on his watch. Yahoo sports
