UNCHARTED MOVIE IS ON THE WAY WITH BIG STARS ATTACHED

JOE PESCI AND ROBERT DE NIRO

It's hard to fathom seeing Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci reuniting on the silver screen based on a story from a popular videogame but it's looking like something which may become a reality. We know Sony and Columbia Pictures are moving forward with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune---an adaptation of the best-selling game---with Mark Wahlberg set to star and David O. Russell set to direct. And with both De Niro and Pesci in talks to join the production (not a done deal yet), helmer Russell sat down with the Los Angeles Times' 24 Frames to discuss where they're at in the development stage.

MARK WAHLBERG

Plot Concept: Based on the popular 2007 game from Sony, the story follows a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter named Nate Drake who believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray, then is ratcheted up several notches when creatures -- actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis -- begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure's true secrets. Neuron-Like Computer Hardware Finally Gets Software

Over the last few years, engineers have proposed a number of arcane materials, such as graphene or quantum computer chips, as alternatives for the silicon chips that run modern computers. With the development of actual software to go along with the futuristic hardware, circuit components called memristors have now taken the lead in the race to replace silicon. Even more promisingly, memristors behave like neurons in many ways, allowing scientists to use this software to create a kind of digital brain.

As first reported in IEEE Spectrum, the Modular Neural Exploring Traveling Agent (MoNETA) project looks to combine the artificial intelligence software research of Boston University's (BU) neuromorphics laboratory with the memristor technology developed by Hewlett-Packard. DARPA, the U.S. military's mad scientist wing, will underwrite the project, all with the goal of producing viable artificial intelligence within the next couple of years.

Memristors are special because unlike the electrical components in a regular chip, their resistance to electrical flow depends on the current that previously flowed through the component. Through this relationship, a memristor can "remember" a piece of information, just like a biological neuron. By connecting memristors in a more networked fashion than resistors in a silicon chip, computer scientists could create a system not too dissimilar in function to a flesh-and-blood brain.

Now, before everyone starts out on a quest to kill SkyNet, remember that artificial intelligence doesn't mean "as smart as a human." MoNETA's current research focuses on basic navigation and resource acquisition, a level of intelligence far below that of even an ant.
And rather than fueling android dreams of mechanical pets, the BU researchers see memristors neural networks as a path towards ensuring that computers continue to speed up at their current rate. Technews Daily

A Few Reasons You Get Zits

Sneaky Acne Cause No. 1: Pressure (literally)
Dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban says there is -- get this -- pressure-induced acne. So if you're constantly talking on your cell phone, playing violin, resting your hand on your chin, you're giving your skin a double whammy. One, most of those surfaces are covered in bacteria and two, the actual pressure of those things on your face can cause acne.

Sneaky Acne Cause No. 2: Pressure (figuratively)
You already know that stress can get your heart racing and your stomach churning, but did you know that it also increases hormones that can cause breakouts? While you can't realistically knock all the stress out of your life (ha, wouldn't that be nice?), you can try to relax and minimize the drama. Say it with me now, ohmmmmm ...

Sneaky Acne Cause No. 3: Your Pillowcase or Towel
This is a multi-dimensional problem. One, your face lies on your pillowcase for hours at a time, and if it's not clean you're basically pressing a bunch of dead skin and bacteria onto your skin (lovely). Same deal with your towel -- your skin might be fresh from the shower, but if the towel isn't clean you're just wiping germs onto your face.

Annet King, director of The International Dermal Institute, suggests changing your pillowcase once or twice a week and using a fresh towel daily. However, that's only one part of the problem. If you use fabric softeners and dryer sheets they could also be causing breakouts. Turns out, the stuff that makes your clothes soft is tallow, which is -- wait for it -- animal fat. Ew. I don't know about you, but I don't want that on my face. Plus, detergents and fabric softeners with lots of fragrance can cause irritation as well.

Sneaky Acne Cause No. 4: Over-Drying Your Skin
Sure, it makes sense at first glance: if you dry out oily skin with harsh cleansers, alcohol-based toners and skip the moisturizer, your skin won't be oily anymore. But ... it doesn't really work like that.

Instead, drying out your skin this way will cause it to up its oil production, making the whole situation worse. King explains that the skin tries to correct itself and so if it feels dry it will begin to produce more oil to balance things out.

Sneaky Acne Cause No. 5: Tanning
Back in the day, people used to recommend tanning to clear up skin. And in the short term it does kind of work. The sun dries out your skin and UV rays do have an antibacterial element, but tanning is so not the way to go. For one, we already learned that over-drying your skin will cause it to produce more oil.

Also, tanning causes your skin to increase cell production (which means more dead skin cells), so while you might get a bit clearer at first, tanning will end up giving you more breakouts. And don't even get me started on all the skin damage, cancer risks and wrinkle issues.

Sneaky Acne Cause No. 6: Your Hair Products
What's that you say? You don't put hair products on your skin? Well, unless you consistently wear your hair in a slicked back ponytail and never let a strand near your face, I'd say that's just not true.

King says hair products with oil, silicones and plasticizers can clog your pores, and if you wear your hair down, have bangs or even sleep with your hair loose it can get on your face and work it's non-magic. So keep the products to a minimum and keep your hair off your face as much as possible.

BOX OFFICE REPORT Dec 3 - 5 Weekend

Disney’s Tangled stayed one step ahead of the competition in its second frame by earning an estimated $21.5 million in the first December race. With this latest performance in the bag, the studio’s latest animated adventure has nabbed $96.4 million over its first 10 days of domestic release and another $45.8 million from the early foreign tallies around the globe. Around 55% of its early distribution has been attributed to the 3D screen coverage.

Even with The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and TRON: Legacy set to arrive in theaters the next two weeks, the winter holiday season hasn’t gone as planned for Hollywood. We had our third downtick in a row this weekend, with the top 10 films collectively picking up $75 million, or 14% less than top performers in the same frame last year.

US deploys 'game-changer' weapon to Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AFP) – It looks and acts like something best left in the hands of Sylvester Stallone's "Rambo," but this latest dream weapon is real -- and the US Army sees it becoming the Taliban's worst nightmare.

The Pentagon has rolled out prototypes of its first-ever programmable "smart" grenade launcher, a shoulder-fired weapon that uses microchipped ammunition to target and kill the enemy, even when the enemy is hidden behind walls or other cover. After years of development, the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System, about the size of a regular rifle, has now been deployed to US units on the battlefields of Afghanistan, where the Army expects it to be a "game-changer" in its counterinsurgency operations.
"For well over a week, it's been actively on patrols, and in various combat outposts in areas that are hot," said Lieutenant Colonel Chris Lehner, program manager for the XM25.

The gun's stats are formidable: it fires 25mm air-bursting shells up to 2,300 feet (700 meters), well past the range of most rifles used by today's soldiers, and programs them to explode at a precise distance, allowing troops to neutralize insurgents hiding behind walls, rocks or trenches or inside buildings.

The Pentagon plans to purchase at least 12,500 of the guns -- at a price tag of 25,000 to 30,000 dollars each -- beginning next year, enough for one in each Infantry squad and Special Forces team.
