X-Men: First Class taking down the first weekend win of June. The early look into classic Marvel superheroes---helmed by Matthew Vaughn---entered 3,641 theaters across the nation and pulled in $56.0 million as a result, averaging a respectable $15,380 per showing.
Following in 2nd place was last weekend’s champion, The Hangover Part II. Warner Bros. Pictures’ comedic sequel pulled in another $32.4 million in its second frame, a steep 62% drop from its opening score. We find it very hard to believe studio execs being upset about that drop-off, however, as the film grabbed $117.5 million over the four-day Memorial Day holiday in last weekend’s report. With their second round in the bag the comedy has pulled in $186.8 million after 11 days of release. Tack on the $151.5 million it made from early foreign market venues and you have a global gross of $338.3 million versus a budget of just $80 million. It amounts to a very profitable venture for the people at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Taking down the 3rd place spot is last weekend’s runner-up, Kung Fu Panda 2, which kicked up another $24.3 million in coin this weekend. The latest numbers has the DreamWorks Animation sequel crossing the $100 million mark with a domestic haul of $100.4 mil. It also has another $125 million overseas, increasing its worldwide tally to $225.4 million. The sequel’s budget is set at $150 million.
Walt Disney Pictures continues to pad onto their summer worldwide lead with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides digging up another $18.0 million in the 4th place spot. The studio’s latest numbers has the fourth installment of the Jack Sparrow franchise nearing the $200 million range. At the moment, it’s just short of the mark with $190.2 million domestic and another $600.4 million from international waters. When combined, the film edges ever closer to that $800 million global mark by finishing the weekend with a worldwide cume of f $790.6 million.
And taking up the 5th place spot is Universal’s raunchy female-led comedy, Bridesmaids. Their latest Judd Apatow-produced effort laughed up another $12.1 million in its fourth frame, increasing its domestic cume to $107.2 million. Not bad at all when considering they spent only $32.5 million to produce. Mania.com
