BOX OFFICE REPORT Feb 4th - 6th Weekend
Sony Screen Gems faced off against Universal Pictures this weekend with their thriller The Roommate taking down the win versus the 3D action adventure Sanctum. Both of the wide release premieres met their studio’s expectations but quite a few insiders figured the latter release would do better with the higher pricing of 3D ticket sales and the promotional push that James Cameron was involved.
Sony’s genre banner Screen Gems considers to have an impressive record on the profit levels by winning this report with The Roommate. The thriller grabbed an estimated $15.6 million in receipt sales, a decent score for the studio which spent only $16 million to produce the film. The victory comes courtesy of the teen female persuasion, with a 65% female audience for the release, 61% of them were under the age of 21.

The Best Super Bowl Ads of 2011
This year's Super Bowl commercials had a theme — random celebrities. There was Eminem for Chrysler (and Lipton Brisk Ice Tea). Faith Hill for Teleflora. Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne for Best Buy. P. Diddy for Mercedes. Will.i.am for Chatter.com. Kenny G for Audi. (Deep breath, we're halfway done.) Joan Rivers for GoDaddy. Kim Kardashian for Skechers. Richard Lewis and Roseanne Barr for Snickers. Timothy Hutton for Groupon. Adrien Brody for Stella Artois. Tony Soprano for the NFL. And, of course, Darth Vader for Volkswagen.

Not a celeb to be seen in this ad. And yet it was certainly one of the big game's big winners. After all, how often do we get to see an ad with pro wrestlers, trapeze artists, and hippies in a drum circle? Not often enough, that's for sure!
Best Buy
Celebs ahoy! Starring a confused Ozzy Osbourne (accept no substitutes) and the omnipresent Justin Bieber, the ad touted Best Buy's new buy back program. Does it live up the considerable hype? Check it out for yourself below.

GoDaddy commercials aren't known for being highbrow, but this year's entry did give viewers a nice comedic shock. Joining Danica Patrick and Jillian Michaels, the newest "Go Daddy girl" is... Joan Rivers? Hey, Go Daddy execs — can we talk?

Last year's Snickers ad starring Betty White and Abe Vigoda was a huge hit. This year, the candy bar tried to replicate that success with Richard Lewis and Roseanne Barr. The spot lacks the shock value of last year's entry, but still inspired a slew of Web searches on "new Snickers commercial."
Chrysler
Detroit pride, baby! Motor City native Eminem stars in this spot for the Chrysler 200 sedan. The ad's simple tagline ("Imported From Detroit") is an inspired spoof on the luxury car makers. While other ads went for comedy, this one did it with drama. Interesting factoid: This is Eminem's second Super Bowl commercial this year; he also endorsed Lipton Brisk Ice Tea.

This ad, starring a kid dressed like Darth Vader, was a hit even before it aired during the Super Bowl. And it's not difficult to understand why. What kid wouldn't like to have Jedi powers? And what parent wouldn't want to play a prank like this?

Stealthy New Unmanned Aircraft Makes Maiden Flight
The event marked a critical step in the program, according to the team working on the X-47B. "First flight represents the compilation of numerous tests to validate the airworthiness of the aircraft, and the robustness and reliability of the software that allows it to operate as an autonomous system and eventually have the ability to take off and land aboard an aircraft carrier," said Capt. Jaime Engdahl, the Navy's UCAS-D program manager.
The Navy is hoping the unmanned craft will allow aircraft carriers to remain farther out at sea, away from land-based missile systems, while launching air strikes and reconnaissance missions. The X-47B boasts stealth features, with a shape that makes it difficult to track in the sky.
AOL buying Huffington Post for $315M
Online company AOL Inc. is buying online news hub Huffington Post in a $315 million deal that represents a bold bet on the future of online news. The acquisition announced early Monday puts a high-profile exclamation mark on a series of acquisitions and strategic moves engineered by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong in an effort to reshape a fallen Internet icon. AOL was once the king of dial-up online access known for its ubiquitous CD-ROMs and "You've got mail" greeting in its inboxes.
Perhaps just as important as picking up a news site and ranks as one of the top 10 current events and global news sites, AOL will be adding Huffington Post co-founder and media star Arianna Huffington to its management team as part of the deal. After the acquisition closes later this year, Huffington will be put in charge of AOL's growing array of content, which includes popular technology sites Endgadget and TechCrunch, local news sites Patch.com and online mapping service Mapquest.

NASA Identifies 54 Potentially Habitable Alien Planets
"We went from zero to 68 Earth-sized planet candidates and zero to 54 candidates in the habitable zone - a region where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface. Some candidates could even have moons with liquid water," said William Borucki of NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., the Kepler mission’s science principal investigator. "Five of the planetary candidates are both near Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of their parent stars."
At the same time, the space agency and a team of astronomers announced the discovery of a six-planet alien solar system, a find also made using the Kepler observatory. The planetary system was found around the star Kepler-11, which is 2,000 light-years from Earth The Kepler spacecraft is the first NASA mission capable of detecting Earth-size planets in or near the so-called habitable zone – the region in a planetary system where liquid water can exist on the surface of the planet orbiting its host star. The Game's Drew Sidora Caught On Wiretaps in Cocaine Case
According to the feds, Ransom and Brascom, who was Drew Sidora's boyfriend, imported over 400 kilos of cocaine into the city of Baltimore.The men, along with local DJ Darrin Ebro, used private jets to send back over $4 million in drug proceeds. Baltimore's City Paper reports that the feds were tapping Brascom's phone conversations, including some with Drew Sidora, who is signed to Slip-N-Slide Records. On the wiretap, Sidora allegedly tells Brascom that she is worried he will be arrested, after he told her law enforcement officers seized a haul of cocaine.
While Sidora has not been charged with any crime, the Baltimore City Paper says the conversations underscore Hollywood's connections to the drug business. A lawyer for Behind Da Scenes Entertainment claimed the indictment was "unfortunate" and said the lawsuit has “also affected other people in the business who have nothing to do with the two individuals under indictment.”
Hip-Hop's Founding Father Kool Herc No Longer Hospitalized
D.J. Kool Herc, the turntable magician known as the Father of Hip-Hop, needs help conjuring up some money to cover bills. His lack of medical insurance, however, is quite real, despite his status as a living legend who helped create a cultural form that became a global – and lucrative – force. Herc, born Clive Campbell, is the latest hip-hop pioneer for whom an otherwise routine medical issue morphed into a financial crisis for lack of insurance.
“This is just a disgrace that Kool Herc has to negotiate over the details of his health care,” said Bill Adler, a former executive with Def Jam Records and a historian of the genre. “People who are not performers think that the musicians they love have a big house, lots of cars and more money than they’ll ever know. The reality is that the majority of people who choose a life in the arts make a tough economic choice. They’re almost choosing voluntary poverty.” Herc’s sister, Cindy Campbell, said that her brother sought treatment at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx in October for kidney stones. As part of the procedure, a stent was temporarily inserted to alleviate the pressure. She said that Herc had to reschedule several appointments to remove the stent due to bad weather and not feeling well. She said the last time he spoke with the hospital, a little over a week ago, he was told that he needed to place a deposit. “He told me he asked them to give him a figure,” she said. “But nobody has given him any solid information.”
A medical professional who often works with uninsured patients at St. Barnabas and other Bronx hospitals said that in those cases, the hospital might ask for a deposit and set up a reduced-fee schedule to ensure that the patient showed up for treatment. Fans, promoters and D.J.’s have rallied to Herc’s side, vowing to raise funds to help him pay his bills. In the meantime, Ms. Campbell said, her brother was at home and taking painkillers to alleviate the discomfort.
BOX OFFICE REPORT Jan 28 - 30 Weekend
In this weekend between the end of the playoff race and next weekend’s Super Bowl (Packers and Steelers, movie goers flipped the horror switch by choosing Warner Bros. Pictures’ exorcism tale The Rite as the winner. In another report where overall revenue was down across the board---15% from the same frame last year---the Anthony Hopkins-led release scared up $15 million on 2,985 venues across the nation. It’s a decent opening for New Line and Warner Bros., with director Mikael Hafstron (1408) managing to keep its budget down to only $37 million.
Following in 2nd place is Paramount’s romantic buddy comedy No Strings Attached, which dropped a place by taking in another $13.7 million in estimated receipts. The release’s second frame numbers increased its domestic cume to $39.7 million, translating to profitable numbers for the studio which kept the budget down to $25 million. It’s been a good month for Natalie Portman who now has two profitable releases with the comedy and Black Swan, the latter of which has earned her an Oscar nomination.
