BOX OFFICE REPORT Apr 22nd - 24th Weekend

20th Century Fox’s animated Rio finished in 1st place for its second consecutive weekend, earning another $26.8 million over the holiday bout. The latest numbers means it dropped only 31% from its debut, averaging $6,976 per showing in its 3,842 theaters across the nation. It also increased their overall domestic sales to $81.2 million after 10 days of release.

Following close behind in 2nd place is Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, another successful team effort between producer Tyler Perry and the Lionsgate team. His latest release launched into 2nd place with an estimated payday of $25.7 million in receipts over the weekend, a very successful debut for a film which only landed in 2,288 theaters. With the low screen count compared to its competition, Lionsgate and the producer certainly took down the average per screen victory for this report with an average showing of $11,254 per venue. It’s also the fourth-highest debut for two since they began their friendship back with 2005’s Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

Water for Elephants also landing in the top three. The Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon tale pulled in an estimated $17.5 million in its first three days at the box office, good enough for the 3rd place spot and certainly a great launch for a film which reportedly only cost $38 million to produce.
