BOX OFFICE REPORT July 1st - 3rd Weekend

Transformers: Dark of the Moon struck theaters over the holiday, pulling in $372 million worldwide. It’s the third best worldwide debut of all time---behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 mil) and Spider-Man 3 ($382 mil). In the domestic race, the third Transformers installment found $162.1 million over its first 5 days of release (including the Tuesday night shows) on 4,013 theaters across the nation. With it expected to earn another $18 million on the holiday, the six-day tally has it coming in between its two predecessors in the box office record books. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen pulled in $200 million over the same period of time while the original grabbed $155.4 million over its 2007 summer launch.

Cars 2 dropping a heavy 62% over its sophomore frame, the steepest in its studio history. It’s well ahead of the 48% drop that Wall-E experienced back in 2008. The sequel found only $25.1 million over the 3-day weekend, with only 35 percent it coming from the 3D audience.

Sony Pictures follows in 3rd place with their returning comedy Bad Teacher laughing up another $14.1 million in coin. Unlike its heavy competition, the studio and director Jake Kasdan managed to produce the Cameron Diaz-Jason Segel effort at a cost of only $20 million. The $59.5 million it has found over its first 10 days of release means another successful venture for the studio. It also has another $28.6 million from early foreign sales.
