BOX OFFICE REPORT Dec 17 - 19 Weekend

Disney revealed their long-anticipated 3D sci-fi tale Tron: Legacy while Warner Bros. Pictures wanted a piece of the family demographic pie with their 3D adventure Yogi Bear.  Could these two films turn things around for the industry before the holiday hits next week? Not quite. For their part, the house that Walt and Mickey built should be pleased with the Tron sequel cycling up $43.6 million in sales over its first three days. The film debuted on 3,451 theaters in domestic markets, which amounts to a respectable average of $12,634 per showing. With snow storms hampering the box office for international theaters across Europe, Tron: Legacy made up for another $23 million in foreign sales as well. The third highest foreign gross for this weekend---behind Voyage of the Dawn Treader ($29 mil) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I ($24 mil)---helped propel the Tron release’s worldwide debut to the tally of $66.6 million.

Representing quite a separation between 1st and 2nd, Warner Bros. Pictures followed in the second spot with their 3D CG/live-action Yogi Bear taking down $16.7 million. With the adaptation of the classic cartoon opening up in 3,515 theaters, the studio fell short of their expectations which was around the $20 million mark. With hopes that a strong family showing continues through the Christmas break, Warner Bros. and director Eric Brevig managed to keep its budget down to the tune of just $80 million.
