BOX OFFICE REPORT Apr 8th - 10th Weekend

Universal’s animation comedy Hop took down the win for its second frame despite dropping 42% from the previous weekend results. The Russell Brand-voiced film nabbed another $21.6 million for 1st place, increasing its domestic total to $68.1 million after 10 days of release. That number translates to another successful animated release for the studio, with the production budget listed at only $63 million.

Following in 2nd place is the other Russell Brand release in theaters this weekend, the live-action remake of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Arthur. The soft $12.6 million premiere finished out its debut lower than expected for studio executives who hoped for somewhere between the $15-16 million range. Still, it’s not the end of the world for producers as the budget was kept down to only $40 million in change. Rentrak reports its opening audience consisted of older demographics, with 65% being over the age of 25 and 56% of that audience being female.

Next up is Focus Features’ premiere of Hanna, which lands in 3rd place with an estimated $12.3 million. The assassin tale starring Saoirse RonanandCate Blanchett launched in only 2,535 theaters so it enjoyed a respectable average of $4,861 per showing with the 53% male audience that checked it out in theaters over the weekend. The indie distributor is also pleased with the premiere and the director behind it.

“To come in No. 3 was a triumph,” Focus president of distribution Jack Foley said. "Joe Wright is now a serious genre filmmaker.”

TriStar’s sports drama Soul Surfer followed in 4th place for this report, with the AnnaSophia Robb vehicle swimming away with $11.1 million over its first three days of release. Of the four new wide releases striking theaters this weekend, “Surfer” had the fewest with only 2,214 theaters showing the tale.

And the 5th place spot goes to FilmDistrict’s horror flick, Insidious. The release is enjoying its second frame in the top 5 by taking down another $9.7 million in receipts, increasing its domestic tally to $27.0 million after 10 days of release. While that number doesn’t seem high for most releases out of Hollywood, this film was produced by the Paranormal Activity team of Oren Peli and Jason Blum. One thing those two have proven is how to keep a movie’s budget very low and thereby make the profit line very high. In this film’s case, the budget is only $1.7 million.

Highness premiering in 6th place with only $9.5 million.
