In all-white, and bare-chested with gold chains and grills, rapper Kanye West proclaimed in his opening song in Morocco:
“I’ve been dreaming/‘bout this day since Chicago.”
West’s dream came true in Morocco as he performed this week during the 2011 Mawazine World Rhythms Festival in Rabat. Morocco. His ancient Greek inspired stage set featured a bevy of ballerinas choreographed along with tracks from his critically-acclaimed Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album.
West, who is no stranger to shocking moments, took bold measures perform his hugely-popular track “Jesus Walks” in front of a Muslim crowd of 50,000. While the song’s message quieted the crowd somewhat and there was a language barrier, they still recited the lyrics to his more popular hits from the last seven years, like “All of The Lights” and “Gold Digger.”

Besides on-stage, West was mum during his trip to Rabat, opting not to speak, to the disappointment of the international and Moroccan press that assembled to interview and get footage of his performance. The lack of press interviews to help promote the festival’s theme of peace, hope, and tolerance came as West received a reported $1M for his nearly two-hour performance. Allhiphop
